In the past couple of months Robert Barnes has worked hard to convince me to join Fitness Australia. As a former Vice President of Fitness Australia, I knew the inside and I questioned the value to my business.
But I believe it is important to support our peak body –especially when they did such a magnificent job fighting the PPCA! So Active Management is excited to say we are a Registered Business Member.
New CEO’s Everywhere!
In just 30 days many of Australia’s largest gym chains will have new leaders. What will this mean?
We could see more focus on retention or an expansion thrust or perhaps quality people moving from one organisation to another. This in reality happens in every industry every day – it is just new for the fitness industry.
But what will possibly happen is there will be a few months where some chains get used to their new leader. So they will fix inside their house first before moving outside.
This would be my strategy. And what a great time to focus internally in the slower winter months.
But when we moved to the outside of the house, watch out because we would be aggressive in the market. And perhaps you will see this from chains too: a greater market presence come the 2010 Spring!
A Funny Thing Happened at The Gym
This month’s winner is Joan. Joan is actually a member of a ladies only club and she saw an amazing sight.
A lady was walking on the treadmill at her gym, when she slipped and fell off the back. The problem was that the plaster wall was very close to the back of the treadmill and she went butt first into the wall and then got wedged!
Joan says “It was like something you would see on a cartoon. Legs off the ground, bum wedged and the only way they could get her out, was chip the plaster around her.”

You Tube – Clip of the Month
The second most used search engine is You Tube, so you really should have a presence in this forum. This month, I want to share with you how you can get your own You Tube channel:
I have been doing some research on blogs and their value in the marketing mix. It appears from a study conducted at the end of 2009, that consumers respect brands who blog more than brands that do not.
Blogging is not that hard. Sometimes it is even cathartic. But it is important that you stand for something and even are opinionated. People like this as they can either agree or argue with you!

This time based on research that has been taken completely out of context. Albert Mehrabian conducted some famous experiments where he tried to determine how emotion was communicated when signals are conflicting.
His findings were that 7% of meaning was from words, 38% from tone and 55% from the visual.
Put those last two numbers together and you get 93% of all communication as non-verbal. Surely that cannot be right?
Do you only understand 45% of a phone call? If I were to start speaking a foreign language in front of you would you automatically understand 93% of everything I said?
The short answer is no and the long answer is “Noooooooooooooooooo!” but it is important based on this study to ensure our body language matched our words as this will enhance the understanding. Not replace but enhance.
