Last month we sent out a great summary of what Foursquare is and how it can help your business. If you missed it, don’t worry here it is again for you:
Canon Australia have found some very interesting stats from office workers and what is printed at work! They found:
90% of workers looked at other people’s print jobs, when printed on the company printer or photocopier;
10% even delve into the detail of the printed material;
70% had their printing go missing or be taken by other workers.
Hmmm . . . better be careful!
7 Reasons Why You Need Sleep
Last week I was chatting with an industry colleague and she me told she was not a great sleeper. She said she had always been that way, which got me thinking and researching. So to Nic and all the other poor sleepers out there, here are just some reasons why you should sleep:
1. Anything less than 5 minutes to fall asleep at night means you're sleep deprived. The ideal is between 10 and 15 minutes, meaning you're still tired enough to sleep deeply, but not so exhausted you feel sleepy by day.
2. After 5 nights of partial sleep deprivation, three drinks will have the same effect on your body as six would when you've slept enough.
3. 10% of snorers have sleep apnea, a disorder which causes sufferers to stop breathing up to 300 times a night and significantly increases the risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke.
4. Teenagers need as much sleep as small children (about 10 hrs) while those over 65 need the least of all (about six hours). For the average adult aged 25-55, eight hours is considered optimal.
5. Some studies suggest women need up to an hour's extra sleep a night compared to men, and not getting it may be one reason women are much more susceptible to depression than men.
6. 17 hours of sustained wakefulness leads to a decrease in performance equivalent to a blood alcohol-level of 0.05%. The 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill off Alaska, the Challenger space shuttle disaster and the Chernobyl nuclear accident have all been attributed to human errors in which sleep-deprivation played a role. NRMA estimates fatigue is involved in one in 6 fatal road accidents.
7. To drop off we must cool off; body temperature and the brain's sleep-wake cycle are closely linked. That's why hot summer nights can cause a restless sleep. The blood flow mechanism that transfers core body heat to the skin works best between 18 and 30 degrees. But later in life, the comfort zone shrinks to between 23 and 25 degrees - one reason why older people have more sleep disorders.
Sales Tip: How to Avoid “No”
This month, I read a great article from Jeffrey Gittomer where he described several ways to avoid rejection and the horrific “No” answer when asking for a sale. In no particular order, here are the examples and pitfalls of the actions you take or omit to avoid “no”:
Try to please everyone, without following the fundamental rules of salesmanship;
Willing to give a proposal without demanding an exact time and place for a face to face follow-up meeting to go over it with all decision makers;
Won’t start higher up the ladder on a sale, because you’re afraid to go beyond your comfort level of sales.
Accept the first no or I’m not interested as a final answer, and leave, rather than try to be rejected three or four times by the same prospect.
Call reluctance on cold calls instead of being prepared with a value message and confidence based on a deep belief that the customer is better off having purchased from you.
Call reluctant on follow-up because you don’t want to get rejected. Reality: you have nothing of value to say or offer and just want the money.
Won’t call to confirm an appointment for fear it will be canceled. Because you have given no perceived value.
Won’t leave a voice mail. You know your call won’t be returned because you have/had nothing of value to say.
Will email when you should call, and wonder why it goes unreturned or worse, unopened.
Taking the wrong approach. Looking for pain, because you don’t understand any other way. Why not look for pleasure?
Not using testimonials as final proof.

Corporate Blogging Goes Mainstream
Blogging has been around for over 10 years and is seen as an essential ingredient in the media mix. Most businesses now have a blog and it is where journalists look for stories – not to mention where they also post their views on the news.
Blogging has therefore grown into a vital and viral marketing tool for companies of all sizes. eMarketer estimates that 34% of US companies will use a blog for marketing purposes this year, a proportion that will continue to grow to 43% by 2012.
“Businesses are increasingly using the blogosphere to further a variety of corporate functions, such as communications, lead generation, customer service and brand marketing,” said Paul Verna, eMarketer senior analyst and author of the new report “Corporate Blogging: Media and Marketing Firms Drive Growth.”
While blogging still tends not to rate such high usage as newer forms of social media like Facebook and Twitter, it still has many strengths, including:
Thought leadership;
Positioning as an expert;
Full control over branding;
Integration with website;
No limit on post length;
The existence of a full, easily searchable one place for information; and
Assistance in search engine optimisation.
But what is amazing is it's where journalists go for finding information on stories, if not creating stories.
If you need help starting a blog, give Justin a yell:

The saying “the pen is mightier than the sword” should be changed to the key board! And last month I blogged after the A Current Affair program with a controversial and emotionally charged headline: Charge Rowena & Blake with Treason. This headline created great interest and spiked visits to my blog site and also my Facebook site. Note – at the point of blogging and not knowing the facts, I truly believed what I was writing.
This blog caused plenty of discussion about the TV show, the individuals involved (including me), and the power of blogging.
Blogging is a key element of your marketing in 2010 and beyond. But when you blog you have to be prepared to cop criticism. You have to have thick skin. And for everyone that supports your blog, someone will want to rip into you – as I found out.
This experience has not dampened my desire to blog, so there will be more controversial blogs to come!
Why not subscribe to my blogs, then you will not miss a thing! Go to www.JustinTamsett.com and on the right hand side there is a box that says ‘Subscribe.’ Just insert your email address and you will be contacted only when my latest blog comes out!

Last month I was guest at the Fitness Australia Awards. Thank you to Lauretta, Rob and the team for the invite.
It was the best fitness industry event I have been to, since going to the night club on the top floor of Jupiter’s Casino at the Network Conference in the early 1990’s!
Here is why:
390 plus people attended
The venue was outstanding
Michael Vincent & Haley Lewis was sensational
Everyone was in great spirits – even before the alcohol was flowing
The majority of key industry personalities and brands were represented
While the date is not yet confirmed, it will be in October 2011, the location is Brisbane. So lock in a trip to Brisvegas to celebrate 10 years of Fitness Australia and the winners of the awards – don’t forget to enter the awards yourself!
