IHRSA 2018 | Takeaways from Amber Willsher from AQUAFIT

After 11 years’ in the Fitness Industry, 2018 was the year I had the opportunity to attend my first IHRSA and it certainly did not disappoint. I have to say I enjoyed all aspects and just absorbing the whole experience from the keynotes, education sessions, networking, trade show, welcome events and parties – all round each event provided different opportunities and learnings. To note my main take away points, I would say:

  • Technology – is moving fast & we need to embrace it, remain in the loop with what is coming next and implement the relevant parts that will work for our own business models. From wearables and apps to fully automated & integrated club software systems – we must not be left behind by the ever evolving beast that is “technology”. As Bryan O’Rourke states “this is just the beginning”.
  • Being a great leader, and having great leaders and managers in our clubs is crucial. Your frontline teams will only be as good as the leaders behind them. Never stop learning, developing and re-aligning yourself, your teams and your business. Our work is never done. For those of us in leadership & management roles Luke Carlson and Brent Darden have some great learnings and advice, with the focus being on the members we already have and “retention” with some great strategies to achieve retention success.
  • Attend social networking events where you get the opportunity. These are one of the best chances to meet and engage with people without all of the rushing in the trade show and session times. There is always someone new to meet and you never know just what you might have in common or may even be able to learn or teach each other.

In wrap up, IHRSA is a career bucket list item to get ticked off as soon as you can. Stepping out of my workplace and every day bubble along with taking taking time to connect with others and upskill for me always provokes new thoughts and ideas I can bring back to the business. No matter what your role within the industry – you will come away feeling refreshed, and inspired and ready to take action!
