About the Centre

Hawthorn Aquatic & Leisure Centre (HALC) is a premier Aquatics & Recreation venue located within City of Boroondara and managed proudly by the Y. HALC is one of four facilities within the Boroondara Leisure and Aquatic Facilities (BLAF) and boasts a 720m2 health club, 3 Group Fitness rooms, an outdoor 50m pool, indoor warm water pool, cafe, and childcare. HALC is located in the heart of the Glenferrie Road precinct, servicing over 3,500 members, 1,300 Swimming Lessons students, and 600,000 visits annually. HALC was recently awarded the Facility Management Award (Large) in 2023 by Aquatics and Recreation Victoria and is an industry leader in customer service and delivery of programs to the community, water safety, and staff development and culture.

About the role

As Centre Manager, you will be responsible for the daily operations of HALC, including leading 5 middle managers, and indirectly overseeing 150+ casual and part-time staff. Reporting to the BLAF Area Manager, the Centre Manager will be driven to achieve the community and financial outcomes of the BLAF strategy, and will be committed to upholding exceptional customer service and safety standards. The succesful candidate will uphold the Y values of Respect, Caring, Honesty, Responsibility, and Inclusion and will play a key role in delivering on the contract with our Council partner, City of Boroondara.

You will lead a multitude of business units including Customer Care, Aquatic Safety, Health & Wellness, Operations, and Learn to Swim. You will be highly visible within the centre and the local community, forming strong relationships and partnerships that add value to the business operations and ensure services meet the needs of our communities.

This position is being offered on a full-time basis with a total remuneration package of $125k to $136k (incl super), experience dependant.

About you

As Centre Manager, you will be a considered decision maker and will be able to manage a multitude of tasks utilising good time management and organisational skills. Additionally, you will be:

  • Able to present the YMCA to the local community as well as provide leadership and vision for the facility and its staff.
  • Able to work both independently and as part of the leisure team.
  • An excellent oral and written communicator, you will be able to work in partnership with the Boroondara team as well as other community groups to develop programs and services to meet the needs of the community.
  • Self-motivated, able to engage staff and the community and will be able to drive the business, while maintaining the assets under your control.
  • Organised and have a demonstrated ability to engage staff and improve business performance, with strong project management skills.
  • Focused on the customer experience and cultivate a culture of continuous learning amongst the staff teams.
  • Have strong general business and financial acumen.
  • Be able to foster a culture of safety at the facility and have experience managing risk
  • Aligned with the Y’s values is critical for this role.

Experience

Previous leadership experience is essential for this role. Experience in a similar role within the Sports & Recreation industry will be highly regarded but if you have significant team leadership and budget management experience from a different industry, we would love to hear from you!

Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualifications in Sports Management, Business Management, or other related field will be highly regarded
  • HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
  • HLTAID011 Provide First Aid
