The Power of #Hashtags

We see #Hashtags everywhere these days but why do we use them?  Two reasons:

1. When you use the #Hashtag people outside your network can see what you have posted on-line.
2. Expands your reach to people interested in your #Hashtag

But is there anything more ugly than an Instagram pic pushed to Facebook with 10+ hashtags?  And does it work?
